Alaknanda river in Uttarakhand (27th March, 2016) : Alakananda river is formed at the confluence of Dhauli (western) and Vishnuganga at Vishnuprayag in Chamoli district of Uttarakhand. The elevation of the confluence is 4,743 feet above sea level. This river then flows south – west to Chamoli receiving the Rudra, Garur, Patal Ganges  and the Birahhi Ganga at Birahi. Thence in a southerly, to Nandaprayag, where Alaknanda is joined by Nandakini from the east in latitude 30⁰ – 19’ – 56” and latitude 79⁰ – 21’ – 29” at an elevation of 2805 feet above sea level. From here, Alaknanda turns south – west to Karnaprayag, 90 km from Vishnuprayag, where the river Pindar joins it on the left bank at an elevation of 2,600 feet above sea level. After Karnaprayag, another 31 km is Rudraprayag, where it is joined by Mandakini at an elevation of 1980 feet above sea level. Turning now south – west it reaches Deoprayag,  69 km where it meets Bhagirathi to form river Ganga at an elevation of 1953 feet. The river Alaknanada abounds with the variety of fish with varying length up to 4 feet as per records. The mahaser, ashiala and Kalabans are the primary variety of the fish species found in Alaknanda.

The first confluence at Vishnuprayag starts with the confluence of Dhauli and Vishnuganga and the last is the Deoprayag where Alaknanada merges with Bhagirathi coming from Gangotri to form Ganga, the sacred river of India. In between, there are other confluences – Nandaprayag, Karnaprayag and Rudraprayag. According to the Hindu mythology, it is considered sacred act by taking holi dip in these confluences.
