Asan Barrage is located in the district of Dehradun in Uttarakhand. The barrage is a tourist destination for the visitors from surrounding areas as well as from other parts of India. The barrage acts as the reservoir for the hydroelectric power generation. The barrage is well connected with the city of Dehradun at a distance of 2 hours journey. The settlements near the barrage are Dhakrani, Dhalipur and Kulhal, which also generate electricity. The barrage is famous for its exotic location and the birds which come from different other regions. People visit here to watch the variety of birds. These birds shuttle every year according to the season from one place to another. The place has become a paradise for the bird lovers, and is always listed as the bird venue in bird festival. This year the bird festival was held in the month of February, 2016. Thousands of bird watchers arrived here to view the range of birds. This place was the main attraction among other venues.
As per the official records, more than 250 bird species including 80 water birds have been observed. Few of the important species are Brahminy ducks, Dabbling Duck, Rudely Shel duck, Diving Duck. Birds; Herons, storks, Egrets, Ibises are Geese, which can be seen during winter season (Nov to Feb).

By Air: The nearest airport is Jolly Grant, which is 23 km from Dehradun.
By Road: Asan Barrage is connected by road to Dehradun, 38 km away, on the way to Himanchal Pradesh. Dehradun is well connected by railway, road and air route.

Migratory birds (26th October, 2016): Migratory bird species about 12 different types have recently flocked to Asan Conservation Reserve in Dehradun. The officials expect the arrival of many more species in the coming days. In recent days more than 350 migratory birds of about a dozen species have arrived at Asan Conservation Reserve (ACR) in Dehradun. Around 200 ruddy shelducks, with distinctive orange-brown plumage, can be seen around the wetland of Asan Barrage. Manu other birds have also flocked to the reserve which include common coot, common pochard, grey heron, gadwali duck, mallard duck, little pond heron and great cormorant. As per one forest official, Chakrata forest division, the wetland has been a center of attraction as over 350 individuals (birds) have reached here. They are expecting more bird species soon. Migratory birds from various countries take a long journey to Asan in October and after five-month stay, return back to their home countries in March.
