Auli, the skiing paradise (7th March, 2016) : Auli located in the Chamoli district of Uttarakhand is famous for its ski slopes and beautiful meadows. For last many years, the reputation of Auli as tourist destination has been growing with leaps and bounds. Every winter, the skiers from different parts of India and abroad visit to participate the skiing events at Auli. Auli is known for its long skiing slopes and many national and international events have already been organized with success. Unfortunately, this year, the skiing events could not be organized due to lack of the snow, but there was a rush of amateur skiers to learn the basics of the skiing.
Auli also gets its attraction due to its proximity with Joshimath which is connected by a ropeway and road. The length of the ropeway is around 3.75 km and it takes around 25 minutes to reach there at Auli by ropeway. The road to Auli starts at the beginning of the town towards Badrinath and the distance is 16 km which is normally covered within 35-40 minutes by a vehicle at a moderate speed. At Auli, the tourists can also enjoy adventure sports like rock climbing / rappelling, flying fox, motor bike riding etc. The chair car journey (300 mtr.) is also a very unique experience, which one must experience. A trek can also be done from joshimath to Auli which is around 4-5 km in length. From Auli, one can also visit Gorson by trekking which is around 3 km long trek route. The Gorson bugyals are very beautiful and worth visiting. One can see chain of famous Himalayan peaks of Nanda devi, Hathi Parvat etc. Auli – Gorson is also one of the treks for Kuari pass. In total, Auli is one of the most important destinations in Uttarakhand due to its unique identity of skiing activity and other factors like proximity and affiliation with Joshimath and Kuari pass trek. The famous places like valley of flowers, Hemkund Sahib, Badrinath, Dronagiri Parvat, Niti pass etc. are also nearby and reachable from here.
To reach Auli from New Delhi, one can take the Rishikesh route via Muzzafarnagar and Roorkie. If you start from New Delhi at night, then your reach Rishikesh early morning next day. Auli is around 266 km from Rishikesh and reachable within a day (10 – 11 hours). But, If you start at the morning / afternoon from New Delhi, then you have to take a halt at Rishikesh / Srinagar and start journey next day, as the journey during night is not permissible in the Garhwal region after Rishikesh.
