Badrinath temple closes on Tuesday 17th Nov. 2015 : Portals of the Hindu shrine Badrinath were closed amid Vedic chants on Tuesday (17th Nov 2015) for a six-month winter break. A large number of pilgrims, priests and officials of the Badri Kedar Temple Committee were present at the closing ceremony of the portals on Tuesday.
According to state police records, 3.6 lakh pilgrims visited the shrine this year, which is slightly higher than last year. Badrinath is one of the four shrines of Uttarakhand. The portals of other three shrines, Kedarnath, Yamunotri and Gangotri have been closed for the winter break.
A prominent priest at Badrinath temple told that before the closing of the portals, the idol of Lord Badrinath was covered with a woollen blanket and kept in a wooden trunk. Girls from a nearby village, Mana, prepared the woolen blanket.
This year the rush of the pilgrims to the shrine has increased in numbers but the business activity on the route has not increased proportionately. According to the Manager of one of the TRHs, the occupancy of that particular TRH was 30% during the season. Before 2013 disaster the TRH used to earn Rs. 6 lakh in a month. This year earnings were hardly Rs. 1.5 lakh.
