Uttarakhand is the home to many big meadows / bugyals and the grass fields. The term bugyal is used for meadows in Uttarakhand, where animals are left to graze the fields. Bedni Bugyal is considered the most beautiful bugyal in Uttarakhand. The base for Bedni bugyal is Lohajang or Wan, which can be reached from Karnaprayag or Nainital via Dewal. Bedni is at a height of almost 3354 mtr and one is captivated by the beauty of the landscape. The trek to Roopkund goes via Bedni bugyal. This bugyal has its charm and one gets spellbound by its natural beauty endowed upon by Mother Nature. The lush green field would look like artificial carpeting on undulating fields of Bedni Bugyal. To reach Bedni Bugyal, one has to travel by motor vehicle till Wan which is the last road head. From Wan, another 11 km trek will lead you to this beautiful place. It is possible to scale this 11 km trek in a single day, provided you start early morning from Wan. The distance of Wan from Karnaprayag is 88 Km, which is a major halting station along the National Highway to Badrinath. One can also take journey from Rishikesh to Karnaprayag on first day and take night halt in Karnaprayag. Next day early morning, the departure to Wan should be made early, since it can take 4 hours to reach Wan from Karnaprayag.
The trek to Bedni Bugyal is also the route for Roopkund, the mystery lake. The trek is not very tough till Bedni but still demands physical fitness. There is no staying facility at Bedni Bugyal, so one has to prepare his staying arrangements on his own. The chances of one reaching there at the bugyal is in the evening, when the sun is about to go down and the stars would start appearing hazily in the sky. Soon after pitching your tents and taking out your warm clothes for the night will make you realize that the destination has been scaled, and you are in one of the most beautiful meadows in India. Within few hours in the dark night, you would see clusters of stars as never before, if the weather favours. The combination of fresh and cold air with dazzling sky full of stars will leave you astonished. If you have never visited any bugyal or high altitude place, you will definitely get the experience of lifetime. The next day can be used to spend leisurely in Bedni Bugyal and feel the natural beauty in the lap of Himalaya. If you are planning to visit further till Roopkund, then read the following. On third day, you can come back to Karnaprayag.
The best practice is to hire a tour operator who provides all the required necessities for the trek including tent stay, guide, meal etc. The trekking activity is a bit different tourism activity and needs careful planning. How to reach Bedni Bugyal from New Delhi:
You can take bus / train / taxi from New Delhi to Rishikesh.
1st day: Rishikesh to Karanaprayag (170 km motor road)
2nd day: Karanaprayag to Wan (88 km motor road) and Bedni Bugyal(11 km trek)
3rd day: stay at Bedni Bugyal
4th day: Bedni Bugyal to Karnaprayag
5th day: Back to Rishikesh / Hariwar to catch the night train / bus to Delhi.
