Those interested in undertaking the trek from Gangotri to Sri Kedarnath will have to return to Bhatwari (71 km from Gangotri) and then go on by 2 kms to Mala from where the trek commences.  This is the old yatra route and as it passes through hills, dales and valleys, it would be natural to counter a few ascents and descents enroute. The route is difficult and tiring, but one is more than compensated by meeting the innocent folks of the few primitive looking villages and  the glorious view of the snow peaks,  meadows and forests. In olden days when there were no motor roads, all the pilgrims going from Gangotri to Sri kedarnath followed this route only.

One passes through some beautiful ridges and meadows of Uttarakhand.  The meadows of Kush-Kalyani (Belak), Panwali, Matya Kuini and Tali are what travellers’ dreams are made of. These are  lush green grass lands dotted with flowers of every colour and hue and edged with dense forests,  set amidst brilliant snow peaks that tower to the Heavens.  There is romance in Nature and a fragrance in the air.

Side trips can be organised to the beautiful and famous lakes of Mashartal and Sahashratal.  Mashartal, situated at a height of 1393 mtr above sea-level is 4 km from Budhakedar, whilst Sahshratal is 14 km further on.

The trek should be properly planned.  There are old chattis and P.W.D. Rest Houses along the route. At some places, tents may be necessary.
