The golden era of Indo-Tibet trade  can be counted till 1962 when the border war between India and China put an end to this flourishing trade. The various passes between the two countries used to be busy with traders from both sides going about for their business. Vast chunks of un-inhabited land on the Indian side used to be full of seasonal grazers from the lower valleys and traders from both sides. With the suspension of trans-border trade, the area has almost become a no-man’s land as most of the local inhabitants have permanently settled down in lower valleys in search of new living, and only the sentinels of nation’s borders are seen at places few and far between.

The trek for most of the time is well within the “no-restriction” area but at times it does touch the inner line. It is therefore imperative that permits for entering these areas are obtained from the ministry of Home Affairs, Loknayak Bhawan, Khan Market, in New Delhi, or the district magistrates of Chamoli and Pithoragarh.


The Malari-Munsyari trek has an interesting historical background. In the olden days before the advent of modern transportation systems, the tribals of Malari side as well as those of Milam side used this route for their social and economic interactions. Several marital relations were also established through this route.

          Geologists and students of geography will particularly love this trek, for it passes through a place called Lapthal where fossils of ancient marine life can be seen as indisputable proof to the fact that several million years back the Deccan Asian plate remained seperated from the Asian tectonic plate with a sea in between. Gradually the deccan plate moved northwards and collided with the Asian plate forming the Asian continent and  the mighty Himalayas out of the spill of sea rubble from what used to be the floor of the Tethys Sea.

The Deccan plate is said to be still pushing into the Asia plate by about 2 cm a year causing the Himalayas to rise by about 5 mm/year. This results in the Himalayan region becoming geologically and seismically active, leading to earthquakes from time to time.

Entry permit is necessary and is  obtained from the Govt. of India, Ministry of Home Affairs, Loknayak Bhawan, Khan Market, New Delhi. The trek is organised rarely and with different terms and conditions.
