Opening of Hemkund Sahib – 2016 (17th May, 2016): Every year thousands of pilgrims visit Hemkund Sahib which is located in the district Chamoli in Uttarakhand. The altitude of this place is 4194 mtr. and almost near snow line. Before opening of this shrine, the route which is filled with snow is cleared for pilgrims. This year also the trek to Hemkund Sahib is being cleared by removing snow on the way by army personnel. At present, the snow debris between Atlakoti to Hemkund has been removed. There were 25 army personnel from engineering core who were involved in removing the snow heap along the route for last two weeks. There year due to less snow fall, the presence of snow was only 3 km before Hemkund Sahib starting from Atlakoti. The army did not take much time to clear this snow trek route. The army has also removed  the snow around Hemkund Sahib and the Lokpal Laxman temple. From 20th May, 2016 onward the route shall be opened for horses and mules to carry food stocks and other items. The Hemkund Sahib and Laxman temple shall open on 25th May this year.

How to reach Hemkund Sahib:

Hemkund Sahib is located in the district Chamoli of Uttarakhand. The pilgrims are mostly from other states. The route to Hemkund Sahib is same as that of Badrinath route till Govind ghat. From Govind ghat, the treks starts and another 15 km trek leads you to Ghangria where the night halt is done. On next day, the Hemkund Sahib trek begins. From Gahngria, it is another 5 km uphill trek.


Delhi  to Rishikesh:                          230 km motor road

Rishikesh to Govind ghat:             270 km motor road

Govind ghat to Ghangria:             15 km trek

Ghangria to Hemkund Sahib:      05 km trek

From Rishikesh to Rishikesh it takes 5 days to complete this wonderful journey to a snowy pilgrimage.
