telescopeOptical telescope at Devstala, Nainital (28th March, 2016) : India is going to install the biggest optical telescope in Asia. The telescope has been installed in Nainital and the inauguration is slated on 30th March, 2016. The inauguration shall be done by remotely by Prime Minister, Narendra Modi from Belgium on 30th March, 2016. The exact location of the telescope is Devsthala at an altitude of 2450 mtr. in Nainital district of Uttarakhand.

The telescope has the optical lens having the length of 3.6 mtr. and the total cost of the project is Rs. 100 crore. The project was assisted by the scientists from foreign countries like Belgium and Russia. This telescope is almost 3 times more powerful than any other telescope in Asia. The telescope can rotate 360⁰ to observe the sky.

The purpose of the telescope is to navigate the sky and few of the most important applications are as follows:

  • Studying magnetic field of the stars.
  • To search for new extra solar planets.
  • Observe the activities and chemical evolution in Milky Way.
  • To understand the origin of Universe and many other applications.
