Bugyals are extensive pasture lands generally found at heights of over 2744 mtr above sea-level. They are usually treeless meadows with undulating slopes carpeted with patchwork of green and floral patterns. During the summers the bugyals become green lawns of different hues, fringed with clusters of dense conifers or they can be covered in different kinds of flowers that bloom during the summer and monsoon months. Generally, the snow-capped mountains stand in bold relief against the skyline, but sometimes the bugyals are so high that they seem to dwarf the distant mountains. Then in winters these bugyals are covered by spotlessly clean sheet of snow.
For recreation and adventure, there is nothing like a trek to these bugyals and camping out under the stars. Infact all high altitude treks pass through one bugyal or other. These two bugyals are near Joshimath and are perhaps the easiest to approach. It is an interesting trek from Joshimath, via Auli, to Gorson. Altitude at Auli ranges from 2591 mtr to 3049 mtr and at Gorson it is 3049 mtr and above.
