Pantwari, the base to start Nag tibba trek (21st May, 2016): Pantwari is one of the base points to start the Nag tibba trek. This is a small town where you start feeling the excitement to start your trek to the summit. Though there is another 9 km kaccha road to shorten the trek by another 1.5 km, normally the trek is started from Pantwari only. This is because of the fact that the place is a little town where you can take rest for a while and refresh to start the trek. One can also buy basic items like water bottles, cold drinks, chips, biscuits and other food items.

The distance of Pantwari from Dehradun is around 95 km and takes around 3 to 4 hours to reach at a moderate speed. The motor route is via Mussoorie – Kempty fall – Nainbagh – Pantwari. The road condition from Dehradun to Pantwari is excellent except very few patches between Nainbagh to Pantwari. This road is also used by Yamunotri pilgrims till Mussoorie band, where there is a bifurcation for Nainbagh.

At Pantwari, the mules are available to carry your luggage. The night halt on first day’s trek to Nag tibba should be made after arrival at Pantwari. It is not possible to trek this route on same day unless you are a professional trekker. There are three traditional camping sites along the trekking route. The first camping site (Burans teak khol) is at around at a distance of 4 km from Pantwari, where there is a water source. The second (Katiyan) and third (Nag Mandir) camping sites are at a gap of around 2 km successively. For an average trekker, the time consumption between these camping sites may be over 2 to 3 hours. So if you start early from Pantwari, then you should make night halt at the last camping site (near Nag Mandir). If you start the trek after noon or later then the options should be 1st or 2nd camping sites.  The guide shall be more updated on this issue, since there are many other logistic issues involved. Sometimes weather condition, health fitness etc. come into picture for proper planning of the trek.
