Rudranath temple is located in the district Chamoli of Uttarakhand. The altitude of this temple is 2286 mtr. above sea level and the Lord Shiva is worshipped as Nillkanth Mahadev. The other remaining four kedars are Kedarnath, Madmaheshwar, Tungnath and Kalpeshwar. It is considered holy to take a tour of these Panch kedars. All these temples of lord Shiva have different manifestations. The story goes back to the times of Mahabharata when Pandavas after killing their kins wanted to get rid of the sin by getting blessed by Lord Shiva . The Pandvas chased lord Shiva from Kashi to Kedarnth, where lord Shiva unwilling to give his darshan to Pandavas dived into earth and emerged at five places in Uttarakhand and and in Nepal. The places where lord Shiva emerged is associated with the body parts as follows:

Pashupatinath (Nepal) – front portion, Kedarnath – hump, Tungnath – arms, Rudranath – face, Madmaheshwar – naval and Kalpeshwar – hair coils.

Lord Shiva was pleased with the determination of Pandvas and gave darshan to Pandavs. The Pandvas were exonerated from their sins. The place where Lord Shiva dived was worshipped by Pandvas. Today, that place is sacred Kedarnath Dham. The other Kedar temples associated are also equally revered by the devotees. Rudrantha temple shall be opened on 18th May with traditional rituals and vedic chants. The winter seat of Rudranath is in Gopeshwar. The idol shall be shifted from Gopeshwar to Rudranath for another six months.
