The kapat opening of Shri Badrinath(12th May, 2016): The kapat of Shri Badrinath opened at 4:30 AM on 11th May with religious rituals and vedic chants at Badrinath. The ceremony was attended by more than 15,000 devotees where all got the blessings of Akhand Jyoti (Celestial light).

The devotees had gathered well before the opening time of kapat in a queue. The length of that queue was around 1.5 km. The kapat was opened at 4:30, whereas the devotees had started gathering since 1:00 AM. The devotees started singing the chant – Om Namo Bhagwate Vasudev.

After the darshan of the Akhand Jyoti, the devotees were distributed the prasad in the form of the pieces of a blanket preserved with the butter for last six months, ever since the kapat was closed. This prasad which is distributed at the opening time is considered very holy and the devotees were grateful for the prasad. At this time of the opening of the kapat, the bhotia of Mana village showed the traditional music and dance. At the same time, Garhwal scout also showed their music skill.

The devotion to the God cannot be judged by the donation  or gifts presented by the devotees, but the love for the God. Some devotees gift flowers and some gift the presents worth millions. This year one of the costliest gift was a gold palki (palanquin) weighing 14 kg. This palki will be used to carry the seat of Guru Shankaracharya from Badrinath to Joshimath and Joshimath to Badrinath. As per the market assessment, the cost of this palki is around Rs. 4 crore 20 lakh. The supporting rods of this palki are made of chandan woods. The name of the contributor has been kept anonymous. As per the internal sources, the palki has been gifted by 8 devotees who belong to Vishakhapatnam.

During the opening ceremony, many bhandaras were opened for devotees. The army had also opened one big bhandara for devotees coming from all around the country. The bhandaras were offering tea, coffee, dishes etc.

The Singhdwar of Badrinath was decorated with 15 kg of flowers. The place from Alaknanda bridge to Singhdwar was totally decorated with flowers giving a magnificent view. The whole atmosphere was filled with the fragrance of flowers and chandan.
