Uttarakhand a trekking hotspot (11th October, 2016): The CM of Uttarakhand announced on Sunday (9th October, 2016) that the state would celebrate the coming year (2017) as the Year of Trekking, saying that the day is not far away when the central Himalayan region would be known worldwide as the trekking paradise for trekkers.
“We are making all-out efforts to ensure that the state emerges as the hotspot of trekking on the international tourism map. In that connection, the tourism department has been asked to develop 80 trekking routes in the region,” CM said.
He was delivering a speech at a function at Kedarnath to celebrate the last part of the ‘Hito Kedar Trekking Expedition’ which concluded in the famed Kedaranth town. On the occasion, the CM also launched a telefilm on Kedarnath and bollywood fame singer performed a musical programme. He said that there is a tremendous scope for adventure tourism and a large part of the central Himalayan region is endowed with natural beauty yet to be explored. He also stressed on creating employment venues for local youths by associating with them tourism activity.
The CM said that the facilities in the Chardham including Kedarnath has improved a lot after the circuit was struck by a massive floods in 2013. As per the official data, this year around 14 lakh devotees have visited Chardham and the Hemkund Sahib. The government is targeting to double this figure next year.

- Chandrashila Tungnath
There are several other famous treks known for their natural beauty in Uttarakhand. The starting point for the treks in the Garhwal region is Rishikesh/Hardwar or Dehradun, whereas the starting point for Kumaon region is Haldwani. Both of the places are well connected by roads and railway. There are direct flights to Dehradun (Jollygrant) from New Delhi and Mumbai.
